Shelter

Everyone needs shelter
From the wind or hot sun
A place to sleep while darkness
Is screeching like a barn owl

Or when the sky is fed up
Wants to wash away our wicked ways
Everyone needs shelter
A little place to hide away

Where your worries are ignored
Leave your boots outside the door
And your baby’s arms are warm

No one asked to be born
No one’s given any choice
You may have a silver spoon
Or be singing with a golden voice

But there are places in the world
Where the luck’s already gone
What good is luck if you don’t have
Anything to bet it on

And your worries never cease
You’re burdened like a beast
And you don’t know what it means
To get what you need

The tyranny of stupid man
Can cut the hearts from countless calls
The rest of us will cheer and swear
There was nothing really there at all

But if you join a caravan
Cross the desert, free yourself
Who can blame the weary hands
That brake the chains that hold them down

You set your worries down
And you’re finally homeward bound
And your baby’s love is found

Where you worries are ignored…

Is This Paradise?

We weren’t alone but we where desperate
There was no way to get home
We found a cheap hotel with a windowless room
And we lay down in the sandy sheets to dry

We’d been a long time on the ocean
We’d been swimming in the waves
Beneath a careless moon, beneath a lazy sun
Homeless as a heart that never loves

Is it paradise if you cannot leave?
Is it still a dream if you can’t wake?

There’s a lily in the desert
It makes a powerful drink
There’s trees along the shore full of fruit to eat
No one needs to starve or go cold

Is it paradise if you cannot leave?
Is it still a dream if you can’t wake?
Is it paradise if you cannot leave?
Is it still a dream if you can’t wake?

We weren’t alone but we where desperate
There was no way to get home
In a cheap hotel above a rock ’n roll bar
We shared a cold beer as the sun went down

Is it paradise if you cannot leave?
Is it still a dream if you can’t wake?
Is it paradise if you cannot leave?
Is it still a dream if you can’t wake?
Is it paradise if you cannot leave?
Is it still a dream if you can’t wake?
Is it paradise if you cannot leave?
Is it still a dream if you can’t wake?
Is it still a dream if you can’t wake?
Is it still a dream if you can’t wake?

Tea and Toast

Call it a day
Race you to sunset
Follow your failure
All the way home
A labour of love
Won’t pay for your family
The family you love
Is labour enough

Look where you live
Don’t worry about the laundry
The sink and its dishes
The dust on the floor
The problems up stairs
The everyday riffraff
The little at high tide
The ghost on the shore

I’m sick of the show
The average white thoroughbred
The racer is lazy
And won’t leave the gate
But look at that chain
Wrapped around the heart of it
The part that won’t change
The rest of its gone

Look where we are
A heritage junkyard
In inherited shipwreck
Refusing to sink
People, I know,
It can be hard to swallow
A horse, he may follow
But you can’t make him think

Maybe we’re born
Just to serve the best of us
The rest of us hold
The reins of the beast
Tamed by our hands
The invention of cruelty
The barb-wired fence post
That won’t let us leave

But if we can’t go
We can make the best of it
A caged bird is singing
The song of a ghost
We are sustained
On bread and water
But love is regained
With tea and toast.

Smoggy Air

1.The colors we keep
In the sky
We don’t need
To believe ‘em
When they say we won’t make it

‘Cause I will be dead
And your children,
Well, that’s just too bad
You should’ve learned to plan ahead

And it’s not fair
We had the whole place to ourselves
For a million years
There’s smog in the air
Nobody cares how it got there

2. There’s an engine
It hums
An insect, it becomes
As it warms
There’s a swarm of the hungry

When we run
We’re all set
But replacement parts
Will soon be hard to get
So we hope we’ll be fine

While we sleep
Promises where made
That we cannot keep
And the airs full of junk
Its blotting out the sun

Bridge:
Evening falls
Like a dust cloud crawls
My baby’s eyes
Her dust cloud eyes
Waiting for the rain
If it will ever rain again
My baby’s eyes
Her crazy eyes
They know that its a joke
We’re paralyzed from our head
Down to our toes

3. Shot a cannon ball high
Pierced a hole in the sky
Everyone agreed that it looked good

This plan’s taking shape
Helping human decency escape
Like a child from a cage

My hands are tied
The law came down from god
And there’s no place we can hide
As heaven turns to lead
We’re better off dead

So Long to Summer

So long to summer
We stand on the ledge of fall
The fog rolls in
And we begin
To heed the blackbird’s call
Don’t stay too long on the ground

Your wings are clipped, your wings are burned
Your feet are clubbed, your toes are turned
And if you fail to take the bait
Your fate may be to escape

Give out, give in
Begin again
Scrape the lonesome sky
No man calls, and no man comes
And no man claims your love

We speak our mind with curses
Repeat the chorus, rhyme the verses
We follow the flock, we follow the fold
Heedless of the winter’s cold

Farewell to summer
We stand on the ledge of fall
The fog rolls in
And we begin
To heed the blackbird’s call
Don’t stay too long on the ground
Don’t stay too long on the ground

There’s only wind everlasting
And we are only shadows passing
Through the attic of our eyes
There’s no room to be surprised

Give out, give in
Begin again
Scrape the lonesome sky
No man call and no man comes
And no man claims your love

So long to summer
We stand on the ledge of fall
The fog rolls in
We begin
To heed the blackbirds call
Don’t stay too long on the ground
Don’t stay too long on the ground

Rise Up to Glory

Though I walk through shadows at night
Hearing night birds sing
Seldom did I bother to break
The branches that bar
The path I would take
And make my way to glory
From monsters in the quarry

Found my favorite face to betray
Walked a mule inside
Moved the mouth to hear what kind of sounds come out
The stories and mistakes
The excuses that we make
That keep us from the glory

Hey, OK.
When given the chance we may
Fall down dead
Or rise up to glory instead
I say
I've been to the mountain this time
I swear
I won't come down

I've ben taking my time
Never shooting my mouth
Always changing my mind
But never figure it out

Thought I was ahead of it all
Handles on my heart
Armed myself to see how it falls
The towers we built
In the heat of the sun
Monuments to glory

Simple Yes or No

Hold on honey I love ya
Its easy to say don’t cost anything
This is serious please
We don’t have much time

For pretty words or love songs
Promises are cheap
No one really knows how long we’ve got
I don’t need you to tell me I’m wrong
Its the only thing that you got right

There’s a shadow upon me
Taller than oak trees
Taller than the pines
I’m not afraid of those carpenter birds
Beating down my old side board
They want it straight from the gut

A simple yes or no
Theres’ no further we can go
If you need convincing I don’t think it will work
There’s a new day I can feel it
But I can’t explain it
Any explanation is no substitute for truth

It was a summer of fuck ups
Another saddle to cinch up
I tried to keep the horse from biting me
Is that smoke on the rise
Or just a little taste of what the future holds

Pointless inventions
Obsolescent intentions
That fall like dew before the dawn
We’re peering over the edge
Trying to find a safe way down
Lets get down to what counts

A simple yes or no
Are we broken or are we whole
Are we wicked are we kind
Are we ready for the light
There’s a new day I can feel it
There’s no way to explain it
Any explanation is no better than a lie

Feeling aweful useless
Tangled up in a loose mess
Holding back the blowing sand slowly filling up this hole
I’ve been digging it special for you
A place where we can hide our broken hearts

I’m terrified of the morning
Like a lover or old man won’t know
What the wicked wind’s blown onto the glass
My windshield is covered in dust
I traced a lazy circle round the foot print of a little bird

A simple yes or no
Its a hallow hope I know
Maybe someone’s watching over all of us with love
But I can’t believe it
I don’t know how to explain it
How would you explain the setting sun to the night.

Before There Where Houses Here

Before there where houses here
I remember an orchard, too old to bear much fruit
Come spring time the blossoms would sure enought be blazing
Before there where houses here

Before there where houses here
I remember a vineyard, laid out in straigh lines
And a building like a spaceship, a broken down day dream
Before there where houses here

Before the age
Came crashing like a tidal wave
And washed the mountain down
We paved the way
Built another freeway lane
Everybody's got to get home

Before there where houses here
I remember a dirt road that ran into the brush
Where no one could find us, not even your mother
Before there where houses here

Before the age
Came crashing like a tidal wave
And washed the mountain down
We paved the way
Built another freeway lane
Everybody's got to get home

Before the age
Came crashing like a tidal wave
And washed the mountain down
We paved the way
Built another freeway lane
Everybody's got to get home
Everybody's got to get to have a home
Everybody's got to get to have a home
Everybody's got to get to have a home

Destination Bound

There’s a child at your breast
Can’t you work it out
Lay it to rest
Come into the house
There’s a storm blowing in
We’ve only got one chance
Put your face in the wind
And your back to where you been
You’ve got to lay your train track down
Before you find your destination bound

Destination Bound

There’s a badge on my chest
Polished by my heart
And a lady who’s dressed
Up like a flower farm
Hairs coming down
There’s no one here who cares
That your face is to the wind
And your back to where you’ve been
Even when the sun was shining
You had already departed

Destination Bound

OOOO….

There’s a coat on a hook
Its too dirty for the house
Sleep ’till you can’t
Get out before the dawn
What will we do
With the flowers that we grew
With you face to the wind
And your back to where you’ve been
We all need water and we all need sun
We all need some one to love

Destination Bound
